Low voter turnout expected on Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Unlike four years ago, the race for mayor in Atlanta appears to be a foregone conclusion. Officials expect a low turnout at the polls on Tuesday.

Back in 2009, Kasim Reed barely beat Mary Norwood to become Atlanta's mayor. Reed is not expected to be seriously challenged this year.

"I think it shows what hard work and love of the city can do," Reed said. "I don't think it's a mistake that I'm in this position. I think we made hard decisions around pension reform…If we hadn't done pension reform, I probably would have a tough race. I made commitments around public safety. You remember the commercial, I said we will were going to hire 750 police. We have."

A handful of lesser-known candidates are running for mayor, including An-Najahshilel Christl.

"Sincerity needs to be the main catalyst in leadership," said Christl. "They need to be sincere in what they are doing. Violence is not reduced at the moment, it's simply spread out."

Christl admitted that he has no previous experience governing, other than his own household.

In Fulton County, polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. In the city of Atlanta, polls are open until 8 p.m.
