Study Finds False Ingredients In Most Herbal Supplements

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11) We as Americans spend an estimated five-billion dollars a year on herbal supplements...We should say unproven herbal supplements.

According to a new study that looked at 44 popular herbal supplements...such as St. John's Wort and Echinacea....scientists found many of them may be made of cheap fillers, such as soy, rice, and wheat, or contain weeds or potentially harmful contaminants.

In fact one-third of them didn't even have any of the plant extracts listed on the product label.

And get this...50-percent were contaminated with plants not listed on the bottle including some that are toxic or allergy producing, not to mention other potentially hazardous substances.

Only two out of the twelve companies were completely genuine and free of plant substitution, fillers, or contaminants.
