Victim Of Serial Armed Robber Speaks To FOX 29

Posted: Updated:
UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

An armed robber is on the loose in Delaware County.

Police say the same guy's been terrorizing people in Upper Darby over the last two weeks and they want him locked up.

It was just before 9 a.m. Tuesday morning when police say the suspect walked into a Subway shop on Baltimore Pike in Springfield and pulled out a gun telling shop owner Manny Uppal to hand over the cash.

"I walk up to him and he says, 'give me all the money you've got,'" Uppal told FOX 29. "I said, 'I don't have any money, I just opened up.'"

When Uppal refused to turn over the money, videotape obtained by FOX 29 shows the suspect put the gun back in his waist band and walked out, but not before giving Uppal a nasty stare.

"I never saw a gun in my life, the first time I seen a gun, so I assume it's a toy gun. Honestly I didn't take him seriously," Uppal said. "Something could have happened, I'm glad it didn't happen."

"This is bad things waiting to happen," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

Upper Darby Police say this same suspect has now struck seven times in the last 17 days from Springfield, to Haverford and on to Upper Darby. Investigators believe the suspect has a drug problem.

"You're looking at a $80 to $100-a-day habit, some of these guys we interview have a $200-a-day habit," said Captain George Rhoades. "This course of conduct is going to escalate, it's bad things waiting to happen. We have to get him off the street as soon as we can."

Chitwood says the suspect started pulling robberies with a simulated weapon, then a knife, before graduating to using a handgun.

Surveillance cameras have picked him up at several locations. His favorite target is Swiss Farms stores in Springfield and Upper Darby. He's hit them several times for cash and escaped.

"They now have guards posted," Chitwood said.

Detectives are convinced this robbery spree will continue and have offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

"Hopefully these pictures can narrow the guy down, hopefully catch him and get him off the streets," Uppal added.

Police say the suspect could be using a getaway car, and he could have an accomplice. Surveillance pictures show him wearing a New York Yankees sweat shirt.

Police also tell FOX 29 he left a fingerprint behind in Tuesday's Subway shop robbery. No one was hurt in that attempted robbery.
