Investigators search New River property for explosives

Posted: Updated:
NEW RIVER, Ariz. -

A man's leg was blown off by some sort of explosive in New River and it happened at a home that was in the news more than a decade ago because its owner was manufacturing illegal explosive devices there.

Back in the 1990s, Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives agents raided that property because the owner was illegally making bombs.  Now authorities are looking to see exactly where that explosive device came from.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's office is continuing to carefully comb over the grounds of this New River home after an explosion caused one man to lose part of his leg on Monday.

"We can be here for the next couple of days because the MCSO wants to be thorough in their search in the their investigation into what happened," said sheriff's spokesman Deputy Joaquin Enriquez.

The victim, 49-year-old Steven Lane of Glendale, is recovering in a hospital, but as he is recovering, MCSO says Lane, and two individuals are being looked at in this case.

"At this point, all three people on the property from yesterday are being treated as investigative leads at this point to determine exactly what they were doing on the property," said Enriquez.

The couple says they were moving out of the house yesterday when the explosion happened.

"It was a terrible thing to see, I'm just glad my kids weren't there to see this happen," said Jordan Perrin.

But MCSO says nobody was supposed to be on the property.  The house is being taken care of by a management company.

"Nobody was supposed to be on property so anybody on property would be considered trespassing," said Enriquez.

Authorities will likely be on scene another couple of days before they can wrap up their investigation of the property.
