Concerns supervisors are using donated cruiser fleet, not responding officers

New police patrol cars and ambulances were part of an 8 million dollar donation to Detroit, but the vehicles may not be used as according to plan right now. Fox 2 has obtained an internal police department email in which James Lightfoot Jr., the officer in charge of fleet management, raised concerns about who has access to the new vehicles.

The email in reads in part:

I received information that the Penske vehicles are being assigned to supervision at the precincts. The memorandum of understanding between the city of Detroit and the Downtown Detroit Partnership states that all donated vehicles shall be used for local neighborhood patrol and response and not as command vehicles.

Vicki Yost, deputy chief of the neighborhood policing bureau, denies the allegations.

"The MOU with the Penske Group is clear and unequivocal: The officers are driving those vehicles and supervisors may be driving those vehicles if they are signed a corporal and acting as a response unit," she tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley. She says when she's on the streets she sees officers in the vehicle, not supervisors.

All in all, Detroit police received 100 new cars from a number of Detroit businesses including Penske, the big three auto companies and Quicken Loans.

Fox 2 contacted the mayor's office and a spokesperson says they are aware of the allegations and are looking into them.
