Vermont High School Cancels School Dances

Posted: Updated:

It's seems like something out of the movie "Footloose." A Vermont High School pulls the plug on school dances for the rest of the year.

The principal Jeff Maher says that he made the decision after seeing too many students dancing provocatively at past events. He says that inappropriate dancing like grinding doesn't represent the school's values, and many parents have complained to him in the past.

Meanwhile, parents are blaming pop culture.

"They are bombarded by society, by TV, by magazines, you know, with these crazy actions, but I think when you talk about it, they'll maybe understand a little bit more," said one parent.

Another parent agreed.

"The school should work with kids to work out differences and continue the dances," he told Stowe Today. "They're kids. They need monitors to watch for risqué or provocative behavior, but I don't think that's a reason to cancel dances."

Right now, the prom is still on. The other four school dances have been canceled. The principal says he's open to discussing different dance guidelines in the future.
