Duggan: I resent the whole 'white mayor' term

Mike Duggan beat Wayne County Sheriff benny napoleon by 10 percentage points. Several national headlines are quick to point out that Duggan will be this predominantly-black city's first white mayor in 40 years.

It's a topic Duggan says he has little time for.

"I resent it; I resent the whole white mayor term," Duggan says. "People in Detroit see me as a Detroiter who they think can make the quality of life better. People on the national scene are writing some superficial articles and hopefully they'll get past this relatively soon."

In the meantime Duggan is getting to work. He'll meet with Mayor Dave Bing, Governor Snyder and Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr. The big question: what role will the emergency manager allow Detroit's next mayor play, and what kind of team will he be allowed to build?

"Will I expect to have input? Will I make arguments? Absolutely. What exactly that role is, we're going to have to work out, but the relationship is going to be professional and it's going to be respectful," Duggan says..

He adds he'll work to build good relationships with leaders in City Hall and in Lansing, and that he doesn't intend to let Detroit down. "I'm going to go into city hall and take on that bureaucracy, and deliver services to the people that are a lot better than they're getting today."
