Homeowner Battles To Keep Piglet

It's shaping up as one of the great court battles in history: "The City of Somer's Point, New Jersey versus Sheldon The Pig".

It's actually a fight over a homeowner's right to keep unusual pets.

Some would think a cat or dog would be a wonderful pet, but Morgan Slaughter thought otherwise, when her son was interested in adopting a pig named Sheldon back in the spring.

"It just looked like a really cool pet to have, so my son actually said, 'let's go ahead and get a pig.' So I said, okay," Slaughter said.

Morgan said that Sheldon even shows identical qualities to her past canine companions.

"He needs to be fed. He needs to be taken outside. He needs to be shown affection. He sits on the couch with me almost every night and we watch TV," Slaughter said.

Unfortunately for Sheldon, his family time may get cut. Now, the butcher isn't the only person Sheldon is afraid of. The City of Somer's Point is trying to take him away from his home.

Somer's Point has sent Morgan a violation trying to get rid of her piglet. The violation notice states: "Bottom line, Sheldon is not welcome."

Sheldon's longtime doctor Regina DeLorenzo was shocked to hear about the potential eviction.

"He is a pet. He is a domestic animal. He is not a barnyard. I wouldn't see a barnyard pig. Believe me." DeLorenzo said.

Morgan has made a Facebook group titled ‘Operation Save Our Sheldon' and has seen outstanding response. With more than four thousand likes, Sheldon has also received Facebook follows from all around the world.

Somer's Point Zoning Officials were unavailable for comment.

With much support, Sheldon's family is hopeful that a change of heart will keep him home.

"He's a part of our family, so...whatever I've got to do, I'm going to do" Slaughter said.
