A suspect was arrested after police say he was driving drunk, hit a Mesa motorcycle officer and took off.
Police say they got a call about an SUV that had slammed into a tree near Broadway.
A pair of motorcycle police officers were at a red light at Country Club and Southern when they spotted an SUV matching the description that was driving on the wrong side of the road.
The vehicle then drove through, slammed into one of the motorcycle officers and took off on foot.
"Once the SUV became lodged on the vehicle, obviously those officers focused their attention away from the suspect who was driving and to providing aid to their fellow officer. At that point our suspect took off on foot, said Mesa police Det. Steve Berry.
Police say the officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and released.
Officers were able to catch up with the suspect, 47-year-old Jose Valdez, and arrest him.
Police believed Valdez was impaired and found he had a .205 BAC during a preliminary breath test.
Valdez had his blood drawn and submitted for an official result.
He was booked for endangerment, unlawful flight law enforcement, leaving the scene of an injury collision and DUI charges pending blood results.
Southern Road near Country Club was shut down during the investigation.
