Michigan candidates draw from hat to end election tie

Posted: Updated:

Officials in Michigan used a hat to decide who would be the next Coloma city commissioner.

The candidates, Bill Smith and Nate Clements, were both tied with eighty-five votes each.

According to state law, the way to settle a tie is to draw from a hat.

One piece of paper said "elected" and the other "not elected."

The two men had to decide who would draw first and Clements politely gave that honor to Smith.

Smith won the draw.
