Nov. 11 Is Veteran's Day

Posted: Updated:

Today is Veteran's Day, and it will honor the countless men and women who have served the country.

Veteran's Day was proclaimed on November 11th, 1919, by President Woodrow Wilson. This was a year after the armistice was signed to end WWI, "the war to end all wars."

The United States made Veteran's Day a legal holiday on May 13, 1938. It was originally called "Armistice Day." After WWII and the Korean War, legislation was passed in 1954 that officially changed the name of the holiday to "Veteran's Day."

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Veteran's Day is "A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good."

Locally, the Warriors' Watch honored Mr. Mark Pontzer, an environmental science teacher at Garnet High School. The teacher had just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan with the Army National Guard. Mr. Pontzer attended the welcome home with his family.

"I'm really proud of my service, but it's really something I don't go into much detail about, he told FOX 29's Chris Murphy.

FOX 29 will bring you lots of stories of valor and courage to honor veterans on this special day.
