Reckless ATVs caught on camera

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It was Sunday afternoon on an East Side street packed with people and cars from the stores, apartments and hospitals nearby. And then suddenly it turned into a speedway for illegal vehicles, all of them going the wrong way.

In the exclusive surveillance video, you see a white four-wheel ATV, called a quad, speeding the wrong way down East 67th Street, with another quad right behind him. Police are chasing them with lights flashing. The bikers are so brazen a motorcycle from their group is tailing the NYPD patrol car.

Motorcycle Task Force VP Jesse Erlbaum rides his bike to the business he owns every day. He told me these thrill riders are giving legal, licensed riders like him a bad name.

Our camera caught the motorcycle from and angle that shows him weaving through oncoming traffic, narrowly missing other vehicles. Moments earlier, the block was full of cars.

Erlbaum said it was pure luck no one was hurt.

"Unfortunately it's mostly quads, which means the danger is most likely to a pedestrian," he said.

The NYPD said the decision whether to pursue any vehicle is made on a case-by-case basis. There is no set policy. In this incident, police said that the quads posed immediate danger. The officers went after them, but no one was arrested and no vehicles were seized. They got away.

Erlbaum says to stop this, the police need to crack down on social media, as well as the streets. He said these illegal bikers usually get away with breaking the law because they outnumber police, and can out run them. He said it is time for the NYPD to beef up the ranks of motorcycle police, like other cities, so police can catch them.
