Dominick`s hosts job fair for workers, Mariano`s may buy stores

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Thousands of Dominick's workers facing unemployment next month have their choice of job fairs on Tuesday. Some of the shuttered stores may be snapped up by rival grocery store Mariano's.

Dozens of local companies will be at a hotel in Rosemont for a job fair set up by Dominick's. It includes stores like Jewel-Osco, Meijer, and Walgreens.

Mariano's is holding its own job fair in a hotel next door for a new location set to open next year.

FOX 32 News informed Local 1546 spokesman Eric Bailey, about the job fair and the news about Mariano's Tuesday morning. That union represents about 4,000 of the Dominick's workers who will lose their jobs.

Bailey was surprised, but happy about the news. His members - who work in the meat, fish and deli areas of Dominick's - and they've been waiting for some kind of word about their fate. He told FOX 32 the chain has been giving them a lot of mixed messages, and this is certainly welcome news - if it actually goes through.

Dominick's officially told the state last week it would shut its doors on Dec. 28, 2013, leaving and estimated 6,600 workers without jobs. Most of these jobs are well-paying union jobs that are hard to come by. There is a tremendous ripple effect at stake here.

But now there is confirmation from Bob Mariano, chairman, president and CEO of Roundy's Supermarkets, that Mariano's is seriously considering the purchase of 20 Dominick's stores. In fact, he talked about this in his third quarter results to investors.

Roundy's offered to buy 29 Dominick's stores in 2012, but the parent company of the chain rejected the offer.

Mariano's opened its first store in 2010, in Arlington Heights. The company now has 13 stores in northern Illinois. The Jewel-Osco chain announced it will buy four Dominick's stores.
