2 suspended border agents get 2 years in prison

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Two suspended U.S. Border Patrol agents were each sentenced to two years in prison for their convictions for violating the civil rights of four suspected marijuana smugglers in southern Arizona.

Agents Dario Castillo and Ramon Zuniga were convicted in April by a federal jury in Tucson.

Authorities say the two agents had forced the suspects to eat marijuana, strip to their underwear and flee into a desert instead of arresting them on Nov. 12, 2008.

The two agents were on duty near the village of Pisinimo on the western side of the Tohono O'odham Reservation when they encountered the four suspected marijuana smugglers whose presence in the country wasn't authorized.

Castillo and Zuniga were ordered to report to prison by Jan. 14.
