EMU police expanding safety patrol, shadowing Wayne State's police department

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Following the recent crimes involving Eastern Michigan University students, the university police department is now patrolling beyond campus boundaries. Officials say they will begin patrolling into the LaForge Road area, a community north of campus where many EMU students live. That is the community where Demarius Reed and Julia Niswender were murdered within the past year.

Students say they've noticed the increase of police presence.

Tuesday officials spent time at Wayne State University, where community policing has made a big impact on the campus and the neighborhoods around it. WSU police patrol roughly a five-mile perimeter and work hand-in-hand with Detroit police.

WSU's approach has helped reduce crime in Detroit. Students are hoping the same happens at EMU.
