NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's almost marathon Sunday in New York -- again.

Yes, the city has another marathon, one that is but 1/100th the size of the world-famous New York City Marathon but filled with plenty of passion for the sport of running nonetheless.

It's called the Brooklyn Marathon. And if you win, you get paid.

The race is the flagship event of a young company called, appropriately, NYCRUNS, which owns and manages some small and not-so-small races in the New York area.

Five hundred runners will line up this Sunday for the 26.2-mile race, staged entirely inside Prospect Park. That is double the field of 2011's inaugural race. (By comparison, more than 50,000 runners crossed the finish line at November 3's ING New York City Marathon.)*

Steve Lastoe, the race director and founder of NYCRUNS, said the company was proud to offer prize money.

"While the cash awards for this year's race are modest we felt it was important to reward top performance and, as the marathon grows in coming years, we will increase those amounts," Lastoe said in a statement. "Supporting the running community is part of our mission."

The winning man and woman will each get $500, according to NYCRUNS. Second place earns you $250; third place $125. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will get credit for a future race from the company.

The course includes three lower loops and six full loops of Prospect Park. Anyone familiar with the park's hills knows that course is no joke.

NYCRUNS said it hopes to grow the race and move the course into the streets of Kings County. That would spare runners the mental challenge of looping the park over and over again while also drawing in the neighboring communities.

The gun for the Brooklyn Marathon goes off at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013.

Making New York City more energy efficient

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?

NYC woman finds wedding dress lost after Sandy

When a New York City dry cleaners was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, the only item to survive was Nicole Pagliaro's wedding dress. But her name was lost to owner Hector Pacheco, who reopened after more than a year and in a new location. Pagliaro had brought the dress to him after her 2012 wedding. When the storm swamped and shuttered the Staten Island store, she assumed it was lost. But two weeks ago, she took a different route to work and spotted it in the window.

The school day will reportedly start earlier for students and staff of more than 450 schools in New York City starting in September. NYC Department of Education told the NY Daily News that the change in time is in compliance with the new union contract. It will allow for extra time after school for teacher training and parent-teacher conferences.
