Rat infestation takes over $2M Ravenswood home

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

No one likes rats and while it's bad enough seeing them running around the streets, it's even worse to have them in our homes.

Chris and Christine D'Hondt say they've had to tear up portions of the basement in their Ravenswood home because the infestation has gotten so bad. Their $2 million home is just a block south of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's home on Hermitage.

Christine says the infestation, which began about a month ago, was initially believed to be squirrels in their home. They quickly realized it was something much worse.

"The dog was going to certain specific places in the house and barking. We thought, what's wrong with the dog? Every place that he's been and barked and dug at the floor we have had a rat," Christine said.

She says they discovered a live rat stuck to a sticky trap under their kitchen stove.

Despite rat bait the city has laid out, the rats keep coming.

"According to the trapper it's the bait that the city uses, the rats are immune to it. He has rat bait in the kitchen and our utility room and down here in the basement. It's a coagulant that's supposed to be much more effective than what the city uses," Chris D'Hondt said.

Chris says recent sewer reconstruction projects seems to have disrupted the rats and is a contributing factor of the infestation.

"The sewer system, the city has been replacing all the sewers and it disrupts the rats and the rats nests. We have also found we have had problems in our internal pipes in the house. As they have torn up the city the rats found another place to go," Chris said.
