Holidays for Heroes volunteers gather to pack boxes

ROMEO, Mich. (WJBK) -

Dozens of volunteers gathered Saturday at the Masonic Temple in Romeo to help let our troops overseas know they're not forgotten. They packed boxes as part of a program called Holidays for Heroes.

The Women Marines Association Motor City chapter has been sending a taste of home to our heroes since 2004. It started in one member's basement and the effort now fills the Masonic Temple on Main Street.
Organizers are collect candy, non perishable food items, personal hygiene items, and games for the members of the military currently deployed. They hope to put together 500 care packages to spread holiday cheer to those who can't spend Christmas with their loved ones.

"When we first started doing this, one kid who got a box said it was the first one he'd gotten since 9/11 because his mom perished and she was his last living relative," says Mary Ann Merritt, president of the Motor City Women Marines Assoc. "When you're told something like that, it touches your heart."

As you can imagine this effort gets expensive. It costs about $15 dollars to mail just one package.
