Autumnal Inspired Ideas: Put A Pin In It!

Posted: Updated:

For today's Put A Pin In It segment  Melina Davies joins from Olive And Thyme in Toluca Lake with her autumnal inspired dishes and I share my DIY Thanksgiving place cards.

We start with salad! It often gets overlooked with all the excitement of the bird and the fixings. But your guests will be wowed with this fresh & rich fall salad. If I've lost you because I'm talking salad...I have one word for you, BACON! Be careful..this one could steal the show.

Next, Melina shows us what to do with all those delicious seeds left over from your Halloween pumpkins! You saved them right? She's shares great recipes for toasting them up with lots of interesting flavors in the oven. Put them in a little burlap sack with ribbon and their a great take away gift for your dinner guest.

Last, I share a project I've been working on for my Thanksgiving dinner party. I make my own place cards out of construction paper. On one side is the guests name and on the other a space to write what they are thankful for. I've attached each to a clothes pin that I've glued lots of gold sparkles to. The guest can fill it our and hang it on my fireplace where I've already attached a piece of twine. Now, we can all share our thanks for all to see in an oh so chic way.

Lifestyle expert Melina Davies, owner of Olive & Thyme stopped by our studios once again, this time to offer quick and easy tips for entertaining this Thanksgiving.

Don't forget the salad as you prepare all your sides.  Melina's seasonal persimmon salad is a great addition to a festive table spread.  Simply plate wild baby arugula, grilled persimmons, marcona almonds, applewood smoked bacon and blue cheese.  Toss with aged vinegar and olive oil and serve!

Melina also offers great tips for place settings.  Roast plain pumpkin seeds at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.  For a sweet or spicy treat, toss them while still warm in agave syrup, brown sugar, and fleur de sel.  Another great treat is to coat the warm seeds in fresh lemon juice, lemon zest, chili flakes and fleur de sel. Let them cool, then pack them in jars and mini burlap sack.  Write guests' names on fake leaves (available at any craft store), place them at each spot at the table, and you have a great take home gift for your guests.

And Maria also offered a fun way to break the ice with guests that may not know each other.  Decorate plain card paper with "I am grateful for…" and have each guest write down their answer.  Decorate the back of the cards with festive stickers and each guests' name.  Then, take everyday clothes pins, cover one side with glue or adhesive and cover in glitter.  Use the decorated clothes pins to hang each card from a heavy string or twine and let everyone enjoy!

Sutter Zachman had his first record deal when he was barely out of his teens. You may have seen the Orange County native was on stage at the Largo and other hot clubs around LA. He then left town...after what he called a few "bouts" with the music business, but now he is back with a new EP called ‘Repeat Offender.'
