Caring Canines: Arizona therapy dogs make national calendar

Posted: Updated:

They serve a special purpose working as therapy dogs for a local health care center and now two valley pooches are being awarded the cover of a canine calendar for 2014.

It's with a wag of the tail that Dolly and Domo greet clients like Joan Feddern at Acacia Health Care Center at Sagewood in north Phoenix.

"To me, dogs especially trained for therapy.. they give you unconditional.. what I call puppy love and even hope for you recovery," said Feddern.

The 79-year-old came to Acacia almost a year ago.  The German Shepherd-Shar Pei mix is key to her recovery and well being, like 90-year-old Ray Pritchett.

"They'll come into my room and demand their treats and sometimes when I am having my afternoon nap, they'll come in and jump on my bed," he said.

Owner Linda Kuhn is also the marketing director here.  She's been training the pups as therapy dogs since they were just a few months old -- adopted from a shelter.  Last month, their photos were submitted as entries for the AMDA Foundation's national calendar.  Mrs. Feddern, Dolly and Domo made the cover.  Domo is also featured in April.

"This is the first time the American Medical Director's Association has used the same dog in two pictures," said Kuhn.

Dolly and Domo visit all of the residents here at Sagewood.  There are about 300 of them, but they spend most of their time here at the health center, offering their therapeutic services.

"They're just tremendous.  I've watched Dolly and Domo grow from 3 months," said Feddern.

The calendar showcases dozens of therapy dogs at their best, but it's Dolly and Domo that have stolen the hearts of the valley clients they help so much.

The calendar will be available for sale on the AMDA Foundation web site.
