Debate gets heated at Atlanta City Hall

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Personal insults were hurled at Atlanta City Hall on Monday as City Council members debated the personal expense accounts of two departing members.

The heated exchange involved outgoing City Councilmembers Aaron Watson and H. Lamar Willis. Both were defeated in elections held earlier this month.

During a meeting on Monday morning, Atlanta City Councilmember Felicia Moore said she'd heard that one of those members had drained the funds from his office account.

Each City Council member is allotted $175,000 for staff salaries. They also receive a $30,000 general expense account as well as $13,000 for postage.

Atlanta City Councilmember C.T. Martin accused Moore of trying to embarrass Willis and Watson by discussing the matter with FOX 5's Morse Diggs before she even let members know what she was doing.

Moore responded, "If your question is whether or not I had any discussion with channel 5, Mr. Diggs, before the meeting, and if it related to this issue, the answer to that question is yes."

However, Moore denied that she was attempting to embarrass the outgoing councilmembers.

It turned out that Moore's assertions about the expense accounts appeared to be incorrect. Willis and Watson told FOX 5 that they had ample funds left in their accounts.
