3 Arrested in Murder for Hire Plot

Posted: Updated:

Long Beach Police arrested 3 people in connection with the brutal beating of a 62-year-old woman, in a failed murder for hire plot.  Police say the victim's daughter and her husband hired a hit man, Keith Phillips.

Phillips, 50, is accused of brutally beating a the Long Beach woman with a metal bat. "…As well as attempting to suffocate her, causing life threatening injuries.  The suspect made it clear to the victim that he was there to kill her and she would not live through the attack," said Police Chief, Jim McDonnell.

Phillips left the victim for dead, but she survived.  The worst part, according to police, is that Phillips was hired by the victim's daughter Holly Ramos and her husband Frank Haverly.

"The victim's resilience enabled her to fight back and survive the brutal attack.  She immediately suspected her family was involved and provided detectives with information," said Chief McDonnell.

The motive for the attempted murder may be that Ramos' 2 and 4-year-old kids were taken away and placed into foster care and the children's grandmother was filing for custody.

The three suspects were arrested in Monterey County Thursday, after a month-long investigation.

The suspects are at the Long Beach jail, held on 25 million dollars bail each.

Detectives are asking if anyone from the public saw those 3 suspects together in the Long Beach Peninsula area around October 11th, when the beating happened, to contact police.
