CDC Recommends All Princeton Students Receive Vaccine

Posted: Updated:
PRINCETON, N.J. -

The Center For Disease Control is recommending that all students receive a vaccine that has not yet been approved for use in the United States.

Help is on the way for students at Princeton University. The outbreak of bacterial meningitis is so concerning the food and drug administration has given emergency approval for a drug that's not even available in the United States. That vaccine is on its way to New Jersey.

The drug is called bexsero. Only approved for use in Australia and Europe it's the only vaccine that fights type bacterial meningitis. In an unprecedented move, Princeton University announced the vaccine will soon be available to all undergraduate and graduate students.

"Pending final CDC approval the University is prepared to accept these recommendations and make arrangements provide access to this vaccine as soon as possible," University Spokesman Martin Mbugua said.

The university sent out this warning telling parents and students since March 7 cases of meningitis have been confirmed on campus. All but one patient has recovered.

FOX 29 Medical Expert Doctor Mike Cirigliano says the disease is spread through kissing, coughing or other contact, which makes college campuses dangerous breeding grounds for the bacteria. The drug is on its way to FDA approval here in the US. Doctor Mike says students should take advantage.

"I think that the fact that this vaccination has been approved by other countries is justification that it should be just fine," Dr. Mike said.

Students on campus who are being reminded to wash hands and not share utensils don't seem to be phased. Most telling us they're glad the university is taking action.
