Handwriting Debate: Should cursive be taught in school?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Handwriting – cursive, to be specific – has become one of the most furious debates in American education today.

More than 40 states have dropped handwriting as an educational requirement and with texting and Twitter, the need for cursive may be fading into the past.

But according to cursive supporters, that is not so. They say cursive is proven to stimulate kids' brains in ways that keyboards never can.

Critics though, say, let it go. They say with shrinking school budgets and a changing technological world, teachers have more important things to teach.

Sheila Lowe with the Campaign for Cursive Committee and Kate Gladstone, Director of the World Handwriting Contest, debate both sides.
