CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A 6-year-old was treated to the best surprise Tuesday night after his father-- a navy officer-- picked him up from his after-school program a month earlier than anticipated.

"Our after school community is a very special one and to celebrate with one of our youngest members on such an important day in his life," West Cook YMCA CEO Jan Pate says. "We feel that brings us all together."

The West Cook YMCA helped welcome home Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Andrew Zerfoss.

He spent more than a year in Afghanistan and this was the first time he's seen his 6-year-old son, Lucas, since he was deployed. Lucas wasn't expecting dad home until Christmas.

"I'm excited for my son," grandfather Randy Zerfoss said before the reunion of his son and grandson. "Lucas is 6, he's been in the service for 4 years, so he's missed so much and I'm so pleased for him to be able to come home and just be an everyday dad."

Zerfoss, along with the help of the West Cook YMCA, was able to give Lucas the surprise of a lifetime.

"It's always nice," Andrew Zerfoss says of surprising Lucas. "I'm glad this is the last time I have to do it."

Lucas, of course is thrilled to have dad home, but he was ready for the best thing to enjoy with dad: ice cream.

Zerfoss and his family were overwhelmed by the love and support and are now ready to start living life back here at home.

"I'm really proud of my son," says Randy. "I'm grateful that he made it home alive."

The family is celebrating by relaxing at home Tuesday night and they're thankful to have their naval officer home in time for Thanksgiving.
