Police: NY man kills wife, sons, then self

A Dutchess County man shot and killed his wife and two sons before turning the gun on himself on Thursday, according to New York State Police investigators.

Police found the bodies of Abbas Lodhi, 49, and his son Zain Lodhi, 9, inside a car parked in the lot outside the A&P Supermarket in Pleasant Valley around 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Cops found a gun inside the car.

That discovery led police to Lodhi's home where they found the body of Lodhi's other son, Mugthba Lodhi, 13. He also was shot to death.

At the time, police did not know where Lodhi's wife was. They believed Sarwat Lodhi, 43, may have been wounded and was in need of help, so they released her photo and asked for the public's assistance in finding her.

Then Friday afternoon, police responded to a report of a body lying near the road along Route 376 in Wappingers Falls, about 13 miles south of where the other bodies were found. That body was identified as Sarwat Lodhi, who also appeared to have died from a gunshot wound.

Authorities are calling the deaths a "family tragedy." Their investigation concluded that Abbas Lodhi carried out a triple murder and suicide.

Pleasant Valley is a Hudson River Valley town near Poughkeepsie, about 75 miles north of New York City.
