Happenings at Halas: November 21

"He sounds like a combination between Jesus and Ben Stiller." Martellus Bennett delivers again. The unlikely mix of Stiller and the Almighty was in reference to how Josh McCown sounds in the huddle.

McCown reacted with stunned silence and a smile. "I'm still trying process Ben Stiller and Jesus...I just want to be there to listen to them two talk."

Bennett followed with, "we all have heard Jesus, some of us just aren't listening."

We all laughed. But in reality, the Bears better all be listening to McCown on Sunday. The Rams boast a very fast defensive front that leads the league in sacks per pass play. Robert Quinn with 12 sacks and Chris Long with 6.5 are the second most sack prolific Defensive End combo in the league….which was a long way to say they are very, very good.

Jordan Mills has the tough task of blocking Long, big brother to Kyle who's offered tips but can't fully prepare for what Mills will see.

"He's the first defensive lineman and defensive player to move on every snap. You just see how relentless he is and not showing any fatigue after that. Just shows how great of a player he is."

Mills knows that means he must be on his game- very technique sound and focused. It will be loud. It's a big stage for Long and his whole family. This will measure how far the rookie has come through 11 games.

Jay Cutler continues to make progress, out of the cast again today, but he remains week to week. And everyone praising the starting QB for his contributions to the team despite being sidelined.

"He's been awesome," Trestman said. "He's in Josh's ear at practice positively reinforcing him."

McCown too praised Cutler. "Can't ask for anybody better. He's been really helpful, because what he's going through stinks. Nobody wants to be injured, but he's handling it well and then some."

That doesn't mean the Bears will rush him back. Though the ankle has nothing to do with the groin, you have to wonder had Cutler waited until this Sunday to return in the first place, perhaps the record would be 7-3. That's just speculation at this point...no one knows. But having two efficient quarterbacks in a league that's tough to find one for each team is a bonus, no matter what the final 6 games bring.

INJURIES: Shea McClellin and Patrick Mannelly were full participants in practice today. This is a bonus. McClellin will likely play this week. Isaiah Frey has a cast on his wrist but will play. Cutler no cast, he will not. Lance Briggs continues to help coach but no official update. No sign of Peanut Tillman...anywhere.

Given their history, last season sure was an odd one for the Chicago Bears. Just as they finally managed to get things right on offense, their defense pulled off quite a disappearing act. Well, it's back. At least, the Bears think it's back.
