Holiday cooking dangers: Phoenix FD demonstrates how to safely deep fry a turkey

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many people will be deep frying their turkey this year.

On Thursday, the Phoenix Fire Department held a demonstration to show how dangerous it can be to deep fry the holiday favorite without using the proper precautions.

It's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.  Frying the turkey on Thanksgiving has become popular in the last few years, but the fire department says it's the most dangerous way to cook your bird.

"The holidays are a great and wonderful time for celebration and enjoyment in our country.  Unfortunately along with all of this enjoyment often times come some pretty serious burn injuries," said Dr. Ken Foster of the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center.

Doctors say these burn injuries can be easily prevented by taking certain precautions.

Firefighters showed us how to deep fry a turkey the right way and the wrong way.  They say the most important thing is to never overfill the pot with oil and recommend wearing long sleeves or gloves when deep frying your turkey to protect yourself from hot oil splashes.  It's also important to always have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of a fire.
