Ca. Town Bans Smoking Inside Homes

SAN RAFAEL, Ca. -

Some say an effort to keep Californians healthy has gone too far.

Officials in San Rafael, near San Francisco, just passed a law, prohibiting people from smoking in their own homes!

The new law is only for residences that share a wall with another unit, and the law applies to renters and owners alike.

Some critics say that this law is going too far, and others question the science behind the law.

For example, one reader wrote, "I know you are overjoyed at the moment but these power crazy megalomaniacs will be coming for you soon and controlling how you live."

However, those who support the bill argue that second-hand smoke is extremely dangerous and can travel through the building's vents and into other people's homes.

Roger, from Chester, UK, writes in agreement, "I live in an apartment and two neighbors are killing us! The smoke wafts in directly into all my air vented windows and balcony day and night. When they smoke in the middle of the night I awake with nightmares and not being able to breath.

According to the Surgeon General, second hand smoke kills more than 50,000 Americans per year.

Besides in homes, residents are also not allowed to smoke downtown, or in parks. This will affect the 57,000 people in the community.
