A couple and their 7 children are lucky to be alive after a fire ripped through their Milton home on Friday morning. The fire forced the mother to jump out of a second-floor window with her infant cradled in her arms.
Milton Deputy Fire Chief Stephens says that they were called out to the home in the 300 block of White Columns Court around 6:40 a.m. They found the two-story brick house engulfed in flames.
The mother was injured after being forced to jump from a second-floor window with her 3-year-old daughter cradled in her arms. They were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with what were said to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The father was also injured trying to get family members out of the home. He was transported to North Fulton Hospital.
The children, ranging in age from 3 to 16, were uninjured.
The names of the victims were not yet released.
One of the teens tells FOX 5 News that the smoke detectors were able to alert the family to the fire, but that it was difficult for those on the second floor to get out of the home.
Fire officials say the fire gutted the home and it appears to be a total. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
By Friday afternoon, neighbors were in the process of collecting donations for the family.
