CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago's Irish community came together Friday evening to help raise money for a woman nearly beaten to death during a robbery.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians held the benefit at the Irish American Heritage Center to help Natasha McShane's family pay for her rehabilitation.

McShane was an exchange student from northern Ireland when in 2012, she and her friend were attacked with a baseball bat in Bucktown. Her friend recovered, but McShane is now severely brain damaged.

Chicago Bears' co-owner Pat McCaskey was the guest speaker at the event.

McShane's attacker, Heriberto Viramontes, was found guilty and faces up to 120 years in prison. His accomplice, Marcy Cruz was sentenced to 22 years behind bars.
