Delaware National Guard Unit Deploys Before Holidays

Posted: Updated:
NEW CASTLE, Del. -

On a cold and rainy day, nearly 70 members of the Delaware National Guard headed to Kuwait for a 12-month deployment.

FOX 29 News was there as they said their good-byes to family, friends and loved ones.

For most, this time of year is when families come together. But for nearly 70 members of the Delaware National Guard, they are leaving their families and heading to Kuwait for 12 months.

"I mean, you try to prepare, but I think until it happens you really aren't prepared until that day," Miranda Emerson said. "And then you take it day by day, and you get through it and you support each other. And, I mean, that's the biggest thing, I definitely will support him. He's going to have it a lot harder because he's the one who has to be away from his family and friends and everyone."

The 3-238th General Support Aviation Battalion performs command, control and communication flights and air operations.

"One of our priorities will be troop transports, VIP transports, supply missions – just general support. Overall, we will possibly fold in on a mission, but we'll be required to landings on naval ships, as well, to resupply naval ships in the area," said Miranda's husband, Capt. Thomas Emerson.

They have been hard at work training. They know their mission will be a success.

But what never gets any easier, even after multiple deployments, is leaving your family, your children.

For Thomas Emerson, that means saying good bye to two children, 1-year-old Tom and 3-year-old Macie.

"She was born when I was born last time in Afghanistan. So, of course, she really didn't know what was going on, but I think now she will, so that will be difficult," he said.

More than 800 well-wishers were there to say good bye.

The 3-238th first reports to Texas for four to six weeks to prepare for the flying environment in Kuwait.
