CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Vice President Joe Biden visited a newly constructed domestic violence shelter during a stop in Chicago on Monday.

According to officials, it is the first new domestic violence shelter built in Chicago in more than a decade. It will have two stories and 40 beds.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Democratic U.S. Sen. Durbin also attend the ground breaking, and made comments about the strides the city must take to stop this widespread issue.

Biden is also expected to attend a fundraiser lunch for Durbin and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at downtown Chicago restaurant. That's according to Democratic officials.

He's also due to speak to students at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics. The event is closed to reporters.
