I-Team: Finding the best air fares

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Some of you have been looking at airline tickets so that you can head out over the holidays, but it is always a gamble trying to figure out when to get the best price.

Airline ticket prices can get away from you fast. There are tacked on fees for luggage and many times you are buying multiple tickets at once, so any way to bring that cost down is a good thing.

It used to be conventional wisdom that the one shot at the best price was on the Tuesday two months before the flight at precisely 3 p.m., but it is broader than that now.

If you're late to the social media party, here is a reason to get on board. Some airlines offer cheap, last-minute discounts on their Twitter feeds. These offers are quick blasts and they might not show up anywhere else.

A few years ago a great option for getting a lower ticket price was to check the aggregator sites like Kayak.com or Priceline.com. The business website, the Motley Fool, says keep doing that, but jump back over to the main airline site. They are often trying to beat those other prices.

Are you up to speed on airfarewatchdog.com? Put in the flight you want and it will send you an alert when the price drops. The site also has a blog where you can keep up-to-date on airline trends.

And in poking around the website, FOX 5 I-Team's Dana Fowle found that if you purchase a ticket from some airlines and the price drops, some, not all, but some airlines will offer a credit for the different and maybe even a partial refund.
