Mistakes Of Youth

Posted: Updated:

For many people tattoos are a way of expressing themselves. But sometimes as people change, things change, and even tattoos begin to change.

What may have seemed like a good idea at the time, when you were younger, may be something you later regret.

Shalia Paredes for example got some last minute friendship tattoos on her fingers. And it didn't take her long to want to get them removed. "I work a lot with my hands, so I just don't like seeing them all the time," said. Shalia Paredes.

People like Shalia keep Dr. Will Kirby very busy.

"People get a tattoo, it doesn't represent who they are now, and they want to remove that memory," said Dr. Kirby. "A tattoo that was once bright over the course of 10-20 years will slowly fade or change."

Brooke Bennett is another example of someone who wants to fix her mistakes of youth. Now a teacher and a mom, Brooke wants to portray a different image.

"If they were in spots where I could hide them, I probably wouldn't go through in getting them removed, but they are in areas that are so visible, if I wear shorts, you see it., if I wear a tank top, you see it," said. Brooke Bennett.

Removing tattoos can be painful and take a number of treatments, based on the location, amount of ink, color of ink and even the age of the tattoo.

"Easiest color to remove is black. The second easiest is red and that's very fortunate because most tattoos are black or red. Some colors are nearly impossible to remove, and that's yellow or some shades of green," said Dr. Kirby.

And of course going through the process will cost you plenty of money.

"It costs ten times more to remove the tattoo, then it costs to put a tattoo on. If it cost you a hundred dollars to get a tattoo, it's going to cost you about a thousand dollars to remove it," said Dr. Kirby. Ultimately it depends on where the tattoo is located.

"The easiest tattoo to remove is black ink on a fair complected individual and that's usually on the upper half of the body," said Dr. Kirby. Brooke's ankle tattoo is going to take more work to remove than her shoulder tattoo.

While for some tattoos are lifelong works of art, and there are no regrets, for others they can be reminders of mistakes made when they were younger.

"Think about what you get, before you get it," said Paredes.
