Hosea Feed the Hungry serves Thanksgiving dinner

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It is one of the nation's largest Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. Hosea Feed The Hungry held their 42nd annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Over 15,000 people were expected to take part in the turkey and all the trimmings. In addition to the sit-down dinner, basic person care services such as hot showers, clothing, barber and salon services, medical care, legal aid and employment opportunities are made available.

Volunteers worked feverishly on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning to prepare this year's meal. They turned the basement of the DeKalb County Jail into the biggest kitchen in town, preparing about 1,000 turkeys, 500 pounds of stuffing and 500 pounds of beans.  They also prepared sweet potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce—and of course, pie.

Organizers say Hosea Feed the Hungry has been helping the needy in metro Atlanta since 1971.

Some 11,000 meals will be served at the Georgia World Congress Center, while another 5,000 will be delivered to people who are shut-ins, the elderly and others who can't make it to that location.
