The Cherokee Tavern is known for some of the best steaks in West St. Paul, but for one day each year, they specialize in turkey for some very special customers.
Former owner Dorothy Casper and her family started feeding the needy and the lonely on Thanksgiving more than 30 years ago. Their operation has grown from 200 meals to nearly 4,000, available for sit-down or takeout.
"It's a joyful thing," said Casper. "It's more fun for us than it is for the anybody else. The same people come back to work -- they give up their time too."
Casper's sons now own the Cherokee and they even deliver Thanksgiving meals to those who can't make it in.
All the meals are free.
