Buy Michigan Now campaign promoting local shopping for holidays

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Billions of dollars are spent during the holiday season each year, and Buy Michigan Now, a campaign designed to promote and restore Michigan's economy, is urging residents to think carefully about how and where they do their holiday shopping.

The initiative has released its 2013 Holiday Gift Guide, which is downloadable from the homepage at www.BuyMichiganNow.com.

The guide features more than one hundred unique gift ideas from a wide variety of companies around the state of Michigan. There are items from communities as far apart as Galien, along the Indiana border, and Ironwood, near Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula. Links to each company's website are also provided so that users can learn more about entire product lines, nearby retailers, and the companies themselves.

According to campaign founder, Lisa Diggs, "So much money is spent during the holiday season, that together we have a real opportunity to positively impact our local economy with the choices we make. We hope that people will make a concerted effort to discover Michigan-made products and buy from local retailers throughout the holiday season and beyond."

This is the seventh edition of the Buy Michigan Now Holiday Gift Guide. The first one was released the day before Thanksgiving in 2007, and launched the entire campaign.
