PHILADELPHIA -

FOX 29 News was at the scene Tuesday morning where a car crashed into and destroyed part of a North Philadelphia playground overnight.

Police tape draped around the recently renovated play area at the Fairhill Square Playground in North Philadelphia, it is no longer safe after a car crash Tuesday morning destroyed it.

Police say they're searching for the driver who fled the scene. They tell us they have a person of interest who they encountered moments before the crash took place.

Jorge Vargas describes the moment of impact between a Dodge Challenger and the jungle gym at the Fairhill Square Playground on West Huntingdon near the 2600 Block of North Lawrence.

"In one minute I saw that car go boooooom right there, "Vargas said.

"We saw one of the guys jump out of the car and run into the apartment building right there,"

Neighbor Erika Torres said.

Police say the driver is still at large. They say just before the crash an officer pulled over the driver at Fourth and York, but the driver took off as the officer exited his vehicle. Police also tell us a search of the car revealed a gun.

Eyewitnesses say around 3 am the car slammed into a retaining wall and then crashed into the jungle gym, landing perfectly on the slide

"I just looked and saw the car coming out of the sky. I thought it was a movie," Neighbor Lamont Thompson said.

But it was a real life crash and fortunately for everyone no one was injured

"I'm just happy it happened at 3am and it didn't happen when all the kids are in the playground," Torre said.

Parents say this is the only playground in the immediate area and they're hoping it's repaired quickly.

A spokesman from the Mayor's Office says while they don't know exactly how long it will take; once the damage is assessed they'll be able to give us more information
