Dave Agema meet Dick Chrysler.
Back in the 70's former auto executive and former GOP candidate for governor Dick Chrysler tried will all this might to install a part-time legislature in Michigan.
Mr. Chrysler bombed. Former West Michigan Rep. Dave Agema is hoping he can do better.
The PTL, as its affectionately known in political circles, has enjoyed tremendous support in the electorate. But the citizens have never voted on it for two reasons: Lawmakers, with self-preservation in mind for some, never put it on the ballot.
And as Mr. Chrysler discovered it is tough to gather half a million petition signatures to create a statewide vote.
According to the MIRS news guys Mr. Agema and friends have created the Committee to Restore Michigan's Part-Time Legislature of CRMPTL for short.. .or long as the case may be.
Just the thought of that will cause some in official Lansing to choke on their Turkey legs this day.
Limiting lawmakers to 60 days a year from January to March, slicing their paychecks to $35,000 and capping their staffs at 200 for both the house and senate, has ramifications for the process, but the average Joe could care less.
Never mind any in-depth debate about how this might turn more power over to lobbyists, the executive branch, and result in millionaires and senior citizens serving in both bodies. The public will approach this as it did term limits, from the gut and not the brain, which is why it would pass in a heart-beat, if they can get the names.
You could make the case that the anti-government climate is stronger now than the first ill-fated effort. The Tea Party wasn't around then, the anger at government was palpable then but off the charts now, and if they can find the money, they have a shot at this.
Can they find the money?
Let's see, it's likely all the special interest groups, including lobbyists, who thrive on the full-time legislative culture, will likely tell Mr. Agema to get lost.
Which means he'll need grass root dollars or some major funder to pay for the names.
It's a chance for the anti-government crowd to put their money where their mouths are. In the meantime, pass the dressing.
