RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -

A young hometown hero was laid to rest Tuesday in Ridgewood, N.J.

Bagpipes played as mourners entered church to pay their last respects to 10-year-old Michael Feeney.

The fifth-grader lost a long battle with a rare bone cancer called Ewing's sarcoma.

Back in June, Feeney was named the Ridgewood's "Honorary Police Chief for a Day," but he did such a good job that the title was extended through the end of the year.

The Ridgewood Police Dept. shared some photos of Feeney as the "chief" with us.

The real police chief says Feeney had an impact on everyone he met.

"He exemplified what we term as a leader," Chief John Ward said. "When you look at people, what do you want out of a leader? You want somebody who inspires people, someone who cares more about others, someone who shows courage in the face of personal and mortal danger, and Michael did all of that."

The police department says Feeney helped to plan a number of community policing initiatives, and the Community Policing Youth Ambassador Program will now be named in his honor.
