Detroit election poll worker says his check bounced

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Charles Grant has worked the Detroit polls every Election Day for the past six or seven years. But he says this year, he didn't get paid. He went to cash his check and it bounced.

DEC. 6 UPDATE: The city tells Fox 2 the problem with the check happened after the check was cashed. Comerica Bank told the city the check was ripped near the routing number, which caused it to be read incorrectly by a scanner. The check was then sent to Chase Bank by mistake. Chase Bank rejected the check, which caused Comerica Bank to withdraw the funds from Grant's account. The city says it spoke with Grand on the phone and plans to re-issue the check.

"Well I'm a poll worker. I go in there 5:45 in the morning. I set up. I have to set the machines up."

71-year-old Charles Grant knows it's an important job, making sure people can vote on election day. So on November 5th he reported for work in the city of Detroit just like he's done for the last six or seven years. Then he got paid just like years past - a check from the city for $150.

"I never had a problem - yes ma'am - but this time I had a problem."

The problem? He says the check bounced, which he found out when he went to the bank to get money for his rent and his car insurance.

"I don't know how I'm going to get my money, you know what I'm saying, but instead I'm getting charged. I got charged $12 for this check already! I'm getting $35 for overdraft!"

Charles has been trying to get some answers, and his money.

"They don't know what they're doing down there, I'm telling you. They don't act like it."

Charles came down here to the Department of Elections twice. They told him to go to City Hall. We are now in contact with the mayor's office; they're trying to determine just what happened. As for Charles, he says his days as a poll worker are done.

"They might not have the funds next year so, you know what I'm saying, I can't go through this in life, you know, working for free for them. No ma'am. This is my last year. They can have it."

We're told the city's finance department will be working with Charles Grant to resolve this.
