Gift-stealing grinch caught on camera in Edina

EDINA, Minn. (KMSP) -

'Tis the season of giving, and with many people shipping holiday presents to loved ones, an Edina family is speaking out to warn about a grinch who is literally stealing Christmas from porches in broad daylight.

Although crimes like these are fairly common, it's a rare thing to watch them unfold -- and it's a sad reminder that not everyone is filled with holiday cheer this time of year.

"You don't expect it," Ehren Seim said. "So, you feel violated."

With Christmas just a couple of weeks away, there are already plenty of presents under the tree at the Seims' home -- but it seems the holiday came early for the man who did some of his shopping on their front porch.

"We live on a very busy intersection here," Seim remarked. "It takes a lot of gall to just walk over and grab this thing and leave."

Earlier this month, Seim placed an order on Amazon.com, but when it didn't arrive in a couple of days, he went online and was surprised to find his package had already been delivered.

"We all shop online nowadays, and we don't think about what happens when we push purchase," Seim said. "It arrives two days later, and we take that for granted."

When he checked the footage from his security cameras, Seim found out that someone walked up to his porch and walked off with his delivery about 30 minutes after the order was dropped off.

Police hope surveillance video will help them nab the brazen crook, but there are a few things homeowners can do to prevent it from happening in the first place:

- Sign for delivery

- Deliver to shipping center or office

- Ask a neighbor to pick up the package

In the Seim's case, the thief only got away with a couple of patio furniture covers -- so that may be sort of like Santa leaving a lump of coal in his stocking, but from now on, the Seims plan on taking more precautions in case their next visitor is more naughty than nice.

"Don't make it easy for them," Seim urged. "Whether it's leaving items in your car or on your front porch."

Anyone who recognizes the man in the video is urged to call Edina police.
