Two water main breaks close Niles West High

NILES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A north suburban is closed Tuesday after two separate water main breaks overnight, Pioneer Press is reporting.

The first water main, located on the northwest side of Niles West High School at 5701 Oakton in Skokie, broke about 7 p.m. Monday, according to Niles Township District 219 spokesman Jim Szczepaniak.

While workers were repairing the first break, they noticed more water on the south end of the building, he said, and a second break was discovered. The second break wasn't believe to be related to the first.

"There's no damage to the building that we can see, but we need to repair (the breaks), which is why the school is closed," Szczepaniak said.

Cold weather did not appear to be a contributing factor, and officials plan to reopen school Wednesday, Szczepaniak said.

Niles North and Niles Central remain open.

School officials notified parents via automated robo-calls and also sent out an email to all students' families.
