Copper scrappers continue to target HVAC units at Detroit businesses

Eddie Bacall owns several commercial properties in Detroit. Over the last week he claims five of them have been targeted by copper thieves.

"It seems the city authority and police department are not doing enough to protect our properties," he says.

The property developer says most of the shopping centers hit are those with a Dollar General store or Family Dollar. The latest complex to be hit was on the 15000 block of Grand River Ave.

Each time, Bacall claims, the scrappers have made their way to the rooftops cutting wires leading to alarms and cameras and then breaking through steel security cages to swipe the copper from the HVAC units.

"They might get a couple hundred dollars for the copper from each unit, but it's costing me six, seven thousand dollars for each unit," he explains.

And the cost is adding up.

Other retail centers hit over the last week were forced to shut down until the units were repaired. The businesses are not making money and the employees are left without a paycheck.

Bacall wrote a letter to the city begging the leaders and police chief to do more to crack down on the thieves and the scrap yards. If not, he says, the theft and vandalism will continue to drive away business from Detroit.
