Police Search For Clues In Murder Of Retired Villanova Asst. Professor

Crime scene investigators returned to the Fairfax Apartments on Wayne Avenue in Germantown Wednesday morning continuing their search for clues in the stabbing death of 69 year old former Villanova assistant professor Carol Ambruster, seen here in a photo from the university's website.

"She had been stabbed multiple times, she was pronounced on the scene," said Capt. James Clark of the Homicide Unit.

Police say Ambruster was stabbed to death inside her second floor apartment around nine Monday night. By the time paramedics and police arrived, she was already dead from stab wounds to the chest and neck. The murder weapon was recovered at the scene. Her body was reportedly discovered in the kitchen by a male room mate when he arrived home from running errands.

"She had a male roommate, we've talked to him once, we'll probably talk to him again very soon and we'll see where it leads," Clark told Fox 29.

"You're not safe inside and you're not safe outside," said neighbor Gladice Garner.

Neighbors were stunned by the murder. One said Ambruster had moved in earlier this year. She was an assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Villanova for 24 years before retiring in 2011. Women who live and work in the area around the murder scene are on edge.

'That is so sad you know when a life is taken. At all, that's sad," Garner said.

"I'm scared to even walk from my job to the car. It's horrible out here, it's a shame we have to go through all this," said Theresa Kamara, who works at a nursing home nearby.

Investigators say there were signs of a struggle inside, but no sign of forced entry. Police are still searching for a suspect and a motive.

"It looks like the apartment may have been ransacked , but we're not sure. It's still too preliminary, too soon for me to say either way," Captain Clark explained.

"I feel bad for her. My prayers go out to her family," Kamara said. "It could be her today. It could be me tomorrow or be somebody else."

Police sources say the victim's male room mate is an employee of the city school district. Sources also say he asked for a lawyer when he was questioned by homicide detectives.
