NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Suffolk County cops need help finding a teenage girl with special needs who has been missing for more than a week.

Authorities issued a Silver Alert for Melissa Didaniele, 17, of East Northport. She left home on December 2, 2013, and was last seen in Central Park in New York City on December 6, police said.

She may be suffering from bipolar disorder, police said. Her family is worried that she may not be seeking shelter from the cold weather.

Didaniele has short dark hair, blue eyes, and a lip ring. She was last seen wearing black pants, a green coat, a multicolored beanie hat, and a black backpack, police said. She may be wearing black-framed glasses.

If you see Didaniele, call police at 631-854-8252.

The giant African snail damages buildings, destroys crops and can cause meningitis in humans. But some people still want to collect, and even eat, the slimy invaders. The Agriculture Department is trying to stop them. Since June, department authorities have seized more than 1,200 live specimens of the large snails, all of them traced back to someone in Georgia who was selling them illegally.

The rip current risk remains high along the New Jersey and New York coastlines. Some beaches were open to the public but closed to swimmers. The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
