Woman Searching For Man Who Saved Her Child’s Life

A local woman is looking for an angel who she believes saved the life of her 20-month-old son.

Our Bruce Gordon spent the day with mother and child in hopes of tracking down this anonymous hero.

Little Jayden Ortiz was picking at his lunchtime chicken nuggets when we came to visit. Jasmin, his mom, says what he really wanted was inside the bag nearby.

"And I usually give him, you know, little snacks. And that day I gave him Cheez Puffs." Jasmin said.

That day was last Saturday around 6p.m. and mother and son had just pulled into the parking lot at the Roosevelt Mall just outside the Deb Shop. Jasmin opened the sliding door to grab Jayden from his rear car seat, and was stunned at what she saw.

"He's really stiff. His head is back and his eyes are open. His mouth is closed. So, the first thing I thought of, he must be choking," Jasmin said. "I tried to see what he was choking on. When I put my finger in there, I felt that it was a 'Cheetos,' and I got really panicked because I couldn't get it out. I started screaming. All I did was scream the whole time and panic."

Suddenly, she says, from nowhere, came a tall, slender black man who seemed to be in his 20s.

"He came over and I just literally took my son and threw him to him and said, 'please, please help me. I think he's choking.' So this man took my son over his shoulder and pressed on him twice. My son started crying," Jasmin said.

The crying meant that he was breathing again. Jasmin feels like her son would have died without his help

An ambulance was called and Jayden was rushed to the hospital. He's fine, but the quick-thinking stranger disappeared.

"It's a miracle and he's an angel and I would love to see him again," Jasmin said. "I would give him a hug. Haha. I hopefully won't start crying, but I'll tell him I'm so thankful. And I'm hoping to give him a little gift- not much, but something to show my appreciation."

Jasmin says she's learned her lesson: no more unsupervised snacks for her little guy.

Mall Security says the incident report does not mention the name of the hero stranger. Given all the emotion and excitement, Jasmin doesn't have much of a description, but she thinks she'd recognize him if she saw him again and she hopes to.
