Philadelphia's Hungry On Rise, Report Says

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A national report on hunger and homelessness says the number of people needing emergency food from Philadelphia's pantries rose 7 percent over the last year.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday that the report also showed the number of homeless families in Philadelphia increased by 1 percent over the last year.

The number of homeless people was the same.

Steveanna Wynn, executive director of SHARE Food Program, provided the research on hunger in Philadelphia for the report, compiled by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Wynn says the city's residents are in worse shape than ever. Her program supplies food to 500 pantries in Philadelphia.

Census figures show more than 400,000 Philadelphians, or nearly 27 percent, live in poverty, while many thousands more live on low incomes in difficult conditions.
