Activists protest LA City motion to restrict homeless feeding

Posted: Updated:

HOLLYWOOD (FOX 11) - A local charity group protested a Los Angeles City Council motion Saturday afternoon that activists say would ban charities from feeding the homeless in public.

The protest took place at the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine St. in Hollywood. It was organized by a nonprofit group called Monday Night Mission.

The proposed city ban would require charity groups to feed the homeless indoors.

"We do not have the resources to do so," according to the group's Facebook page. "To ban kindhearted people from sharing homemade food with those who have nothing to eat on the grounds of health safety while they are completely okay if the homeless are forced to eat out of trash cans."

The motion was introduced to the City Council by Councilman Tom LaBonge in September. In a statement to the LA Activist in November, LaBonge said that he hoped the measure would "ensure the safety of people eating on a public street."

"Many public health codes and regulations come into play around food service," he told LA Activist. "I wanted to hear how other municipalities enforce health codes, provide traffic safety and manage the interface with area businesses and residents."

In November, LaBonge elaborated on his intentions with the motion. He told KTTV reporter Susan Hirasuna that he is not trying to "ban" feeding the homeless. His concern is over "public health and public safety."

"I want to try and find a solution," LaBonge said. "I'd like to find a building for them. I'd like to find an opportunity for them to get services."

The LA City Council is expected to discuss the motion further over the next few weeks.
